What happens in National 4?
 
Unit based approach: The National 4 course is undertaken as a series of units designed to challenge and develop the key skills of English. Units such as ‘The Heroes’ unit allow young people to engage with challenging texts, including media, and is geared towards expanding their skills.  

Added Value Unit: The Added Value Unit asks learners to produce a piece of writing which examines and analyses two arguments and to justify their choices.
 
How will my success as a learner be assessed?
 
To gain National 4, learners must pass all Units
Units are as pass or fail assessed by the school (following SQA External Verification)

What happens in National 5?

At National 5 young people undertake rigorous assessment, accompanied by quality learning and teaching, to ensure they are building their skills constantly. Studying texts such as ‘Macbeth’ and ‘Tally’s Blood’ allows them to develop a deeper understanding of classic texts and allows their skills of understanding, analysis and evaluation to flourish.  
 
How will my success as a learner be assessed?
 
To gain National 5, learners must pass both Units and the Course Assessment (the Portfolio and the Question Paper)
Units are assessed by the school (following SQA External Verification)
 
The Course Assessment consists of the Portfolio (two edited and redrafted pieces of writing from two different genres) and  the exam. These will be marked by the SQA.
