Modern Studies - National Qualifications
St. Margaret’s High School

Welcome to the Modern Studies Department

Modern Studies is a subject that is only taught in the Scottish secondary school curriculum. It is concerned with current events and issues in society that are ever changing. It is the study of local, national and international issues from a social, political and economic perspective.

By examining many different societies, including their own, pupils are able to discover how their lives compare to others across the world.

All pupils in S1 and S2 study Modern Studies as part of their Social Subjects Broad General Education. At the end of S2, pupils can choose to study the subject as part of their National curriculum. Modern Studies is offered as a National 4/5 option for S4 and as a National 5 or New Higher option for those in S5/6.
